About Us
Map Adventures is led by Paul and Triada McGrory. Paul started his outdoor teaching career with the British Army and has over 20 years of experience with the Royal Army Physical Training Corps. Since semi-retiring, he has worked for Help for Heroes but mainly works with children in Cyprus, the U.K., Republic of Ireland, United Arab Emirates and Oman. Triada has used her extensive experience as a psychologist in the children’s care industry to create the structure of Map as we know it today.
Paul and Triada work closely with vulnerable children on a one-to-one basis as well as working with disabled children and young adults. Both have created a unique program by combining the outdoors as a form of therapy that uses the outdoors and adventures based-activities to promote emotional healing, personal growth and resilience. Our team is highly qualified and share their knowledge and skills to give the best possible adventure experiences.

What is Child Crisis Intervention?
Child Crisis Intervention provides immediate, short to medium-term support to children and families experiencing acute emotional, behavioral, or situational distress. It aims to stabilize, ensure safety, and prevent long-term trauma through de-escalation, assessment, and connecting to resources, often keeping children in their home environment.
Key components of child crisis intervention include:
• Goals: The primary goals are to stabilize the crisis, keep children in their home environment, prevent serious long-term problems, and connect families to ongoing support services.
• Targeted Support: It focuses on managing intense emotions (anger, frustration, fear) and teaching coping skills to children, often tailored for neurodivergent traits like ADHD.
• Methods: Interventions include 24/7 crisis response, assessment, family therapy, case management, and sometimes physical intervention to ensure safety.
• Contexts: These services operate in schools, at home, or through community agencies to resolve conflicts, runaway behaviors, or traumatic events.
What is Adventure Therapy?
Adventure therapy is an experiential, action-oriented form of psychotherapy that utilizes outdoor activities like rock climbing, hiking, and group initiatives to treat mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction. It fosters resilience, confidence, and social skills by pushing individuals outside their comfort zones.
Key Aspects of Adventure Therapy
• Definition & Approach: It is a form of experiential therapy that replaces traditional office-based talk therapy with active, hands-on experiences. It uses real or perceived risks to help individuals overcome self-limiting beliefs and develop healthier behaviors.
• Activities: Common activities include hiking, rock climbing, camping, kayaking, rafting, ropes courses, and trust-building games.
• Goals & Benefits: The primary goal is to promote personal growth and emotional healing. It is designed to improve self-esteem, communication, problem-solving skills, and stress management.
• Settings & Audience: While often conducted in nature, it can also take place indoors. It is frequently used for groups, families, or individuals struggling with issues like PTSD, substance abuse, or behavioral problems.
• Core Principle: By engaging in challenging physical activities in a safe, supportive environment, participants learn to manage fear, build trust, and transfer these new coping skills to everyday life.
Common Types of Adventure Therapy
• Wilderness Therapy: Involves longer, more intense experiences in natural settings.
• Adventure-Based Therapy: Focuses on structured, short-term activities like ropes courses.
• Residential/Adventure Camping: Long-term programs focused on behavior change.
Our Statement of Intent
We intent to operate across three integrated divisions - Specialist Education, Children's Residential Care, and Supported Accommodation - to offer a seamless pathway of support from childhood to independent living. Our cross-divisional model ensures smooth, well-planned transitions, empowering young people with the confidence, skills and resilience they need for adulthood.
Therapeutic practice will be embedded across all our services, enabling us to respond to each young person’s individual needs with understanding, compassion, and care.
Many of the young people we will support will have encountered significant challenges, including trauma, care placement breakdowns, and barriers to education. Some may have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, ADHD, ASC, or Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
